Do I need a permit to install windows or doors?
In most situations when you are replacing your windows and doors on your home, you will be required to have your town or city issue a Building Permit. The local town office makes periodic inspections during the build to ensure your new windows and doors are manufactured and installed to meet local Building Codes.
Is it expensive to install windows and doors?
The cost of your window and door replacement project will depend on a number of factors including the quantity, locations, cost of desired window and door products, and the extent of accompanying interior/exterior work required to complete the replacement. The cost to install a window or door in a new location will also impact the material and labor cost of your project.
When is the best time to install new windows or doors?
There are 2 answers to this. The first, is that it’s always better to replace your windows and doors at the same time that you’re replacing your siding and exterior trim. This will allow for your new windows and doors to be properly flashed into your home’s new Weather Barrier, ensuring that the flashing sequencing is completed correctly and keeping unwanted air and moisture out of your home. The second answer is that you’re better off replacing them a day early than a day late. Every day that you wait to replace your poorly insulated or leaking windows and doors, is another day that you’re either paying unnecessary utility costs or increasing the likelihood that your leaking windows have created a larger issue, like rot, that will need to be remediated when your windows and doors are finally replaced.
Is my contractor required to be licensed in Massachusetts?
Yes, the contractor in the state of Massachusetts is required to be licensed to obtain permits and carry the appropriate insurances. The contractor should carry General Liability and Workers Compensation policies that meet or exceed the state requirements, so that both you and the contractor are protected. Your contractor should gladly provide you with a copy of their Home Improvement Contractor License (HIC), and active and compliant General Liability and Workers Compensation Insurance certificates upon request.
How do I pay for my window or door installation?
Normal processes to pay for your home improvement projects in Massachusetts require an initial deposit at the time of contract signing of 33%. There is an additional 17% deposit due at the time the project officially starts at your home and scheduled payments made during the duration of your full project build to completion.
